Pediatric Infectious Diseases Revisited

Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics  Comments Off on Pediatric Infectious Diseases Revisited
Oct 252019

The successful prevention of childhood diseases like diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis has made a major contribution to the improvement of public health, and vaccines and a variety of drugs are amongst the most fruitful applications of 20th-century research.
Today pediatric infectious disease research is closely interconnected with other disciplines. Understanding the biology of the causative agents and the pathogenesis of disease is an essential step in achieving control and elimination of the diseases.

Starting with historical, epidemiological and sociocultural issues, the volume presents clinical as well as molecular biological aspects of pediatric infectious diseases. New insights into the pathogenesis of infection are presented and an update on diagnostics, prevention and treatment of pediatric viral, fungal and bacterial diseases provided.

The role of emerging new pathogens is also highlighted.

The book aims at an interdisciplinary audience of clinicians and non-clinicians: pediatricians, infectious disease researchers, virologists, microbiologists, public health politicians and university libraries.

Pediatric Endourology Techniques Edition 2

Pediatrics  Comments Off on Pediatric Endourology Techniques Edition 2
Oct 192019

Pediatric Urology has rapidly developed as a separate subspecialty in the last decade. During this time, significant advances in technology and instrumentation has meant that increasingly more procedures can be performed by the minimally invasive route. However, access to and availability of adequate training facilities and resources continues to hinder surgeons in achieving experience and expertise in the minimally invasive techniques in paediatric urology. Pediatric Endourology Techniques 2nd edition is a fully illustrated text with an accompanying web application which addresses these issues.
The aim of this 2nd edition is to enable surgeons to carry out commonly performed minimally invasive pediatric urological procedures. This book has been organised systematically to enable quick reference to the topic of interest. It encompasses not only the majority of commonly performed pediatric endourological procedures in a standardised format but also newer techniques and procedures that have developed since publication of the first edition. A list of specific relevant reading material is given at the end of each chapter.
Pediatric Endourology Techniques 2nd Edition is a valuable tool for pediatric urologists as well as pediatric surgeons, general surgeons, adult urologists and those with an interest in minimally invasive surgery.

The Pediatric Upper Extremity

Pediatrics  Comments Off on The Pediatric Upper Extremity
Oct 182019

Sub-specialization within pediatric orthopedics is growing, in part due to the development of free-standing children’s hospitals and the desire by patients and their parents to have “experts” care for them. We are at the forefront of a trend in physicians classifying themselves as pediatric upper extremity surgeons. Numerous pediatric hospitals now have or are recruiting physicians to focus their practice in this area. Historically, these issues were treated by general orthopedic surgeons, adult hand surgeons, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, or plastic surgeons. However, none of these professionals treat the entirety of pediatric upper extremity pathology, and no single reference has focused on the treatment of the pediatric upper extremity as a whole. For example, fractures have typically been written about in pediatric textbooks, while tendon and nerve injuries are covered in adult hand textbooks. This textbook is a comprehensive, illustrated reference that discusses all aspects of the pediatric upper extremity, from embryology and functional development to nerve injuries, trauma, tumors, burns, sports injuries and more.

Handbook of Pediatric Cardiovascular Drugs Edition 2

Cardiovascular, Pediatrics  Comments Off on Handbook of Pediatric Cardiovascular Drugs Edition 2
Oct 142019

A Second Edition of this handbook of drugs used in pediatric cardiac care will satisfy the need for a quick up-to-date reference source of common drug therapy. There are no major texts available in the field of pediatric cardiology that exclusively provide therapeutic drug information. Several sources are available that present drug information for cardiology, but these place no emphasis on pediatric care and are written for general cardiac specialists.

Handbook of Pediatric Chronic Pain: Current Science and Integrative Practice

Pediatrics  Comments Off on Handbook of Pediatric Chronic Pain: Current Science and Integrative Practice
Oct 122019

The purpose of this text is to provide not only the science and current knowledge of pediatric pain management but a rationale for intervention. The book is ground-breaking in that it provides pearls for the recognition and management of multiple childhood chronic pain syndromes. Also, uncommon yet confounding issues such as pain management for epidermolysis bullosa are adequately addressed. Concerns unique to pediatric patients are reviewed. While there are no firm standards in pediatric chronic pain, a care plan is offered to help guide practitioners when possible.
The book will consist of 24 chapters, many co-written by a physician and a psychologist. Chapter 1 covers the history of pediatric chronic pain, the advancement pediatric pain as a clinical subspecialty, development of pediatric pain clinics, and characterization of the common pain syndromes. Chapters 2-4 cover, respectively, the research on early pain exposure and neuroplasticity, theories on the common adolescent pain syndromes, and the demographics of chronic pain in children. Chapters 5-16 discuss approaches to assessment and intervention for specific pediatric and adolescent pain syndromes. Chapters 17-23 address interventional techniques such as therapeutic blocks, neurablation, implantable systems, physical therapy, complementary therapy, and pharmacology including opioid tolerance. The final chapter discusses the role of the nurse practitioner in pediatric chronic pain.

Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome: Comprehensive Clinical Review and Related Health Issues

Endocrinology/Metabolism/Diabetes Mellitus, Pediatrics  Comments Off on Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome: Comprehensive Clinical Review and Related Health Issues
Oct 082019

In just under three decades, the world has witnessed an enormous rise in obesity with a parallel growth  in cardiometabolic disease risk factors characterized by insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, together known as the metabolic syndrome – conditions previously unheard of in children and adolescents. During this time, we have little knowledge of the global and cumulative detrimental health effects of childhood obesity. As obese children age, not only will their health be negatively affected, but infertility and pregnancy complications associated with the metabolic syndrome will affect generations to come.  The work force will undoubtedly be affected because of increased sick days and decreased work productivity.

Identifying children and adolescents at the earliest stages of chronic disease onset should be the goal of clinical practice, yet there is no clear guidance for defining the risk of metabolic syndrome or appropriate risk-factor thresholds in these groups.  If children are identified early in the disease process, lifestyle and clinical interventions can be instituted when they are potentially more effective.

Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome: Comprehensive Clinical Review and Related Health Issues approaches the pediatric metabolic syndrome by elucidating its effects on specific organ systems and by considering the problem through understanding the social, psychological and economic consequences of it.  The Editors have recruited an invited group of esteemed experts in the field to provide the most timely and informative approaches on how to deal with this health crisis.  Through educating our practitioners, our future researchers, our health and community organizations, our legislators and our families and children, we have the best chance at improving the health trajectory of the next generation.
