This book is really unique. It provides clear simple black and white drawings. All structures are labeled w/ numbers so you can quiz yourself. On the accompanying page there is a structure key that also includes short high yield discussions. I am using this book to review anatomy for my surgery clerkship and it’s been great. It also provides the full spectrum of anatomy, including a very strong neuroanatomy section that even separates out cranial nerves instead of having extremely confusing and jumbled diagrams like in Netter’s.

1. I really like this book because it has good pictures and lots of really useful information pertaining to hematology and blood work. I really appreciate that it is a small booklet size that can be carried around in a bag or a pocket without difficulty. The price is also much better for this book than for some colour atlas’ and the content is still just as relevant and scientifically based.

2. The images are high quality, and the text is adequate.

REVIEW

I am a practicing, Canadian surgeon in a teaching hospital and University.

For the medical student, physician, surgical resident and practicing surgeon … there is simply no better atlas!

This was one of the first atlases to be published in the English speaking world – although there were quite good atlases published in Germany for severely years previously. Professor Grant was the foremost anatomist of his generation and his brilliant textbook of Anatomy “Method of Anatomy” was published in the 1940s. Professor Grant continued to write the “Method of Anatomy” until the 1970s … and then, for some inexplicable reason, subsequent authors of the book changed the

character of the book completely, until it petered out in the 1980s. The “Method of Anatomy” was the first book to make anatomy a deductive, interesting and exciting science. It is no longer in print, but if you can get hold of one of the copies authored by Grant, it will immediately capture your imagination.

The “Atlas” was made to accompany the “Method of Anatomy.” As such, it contained – and still contains – much from the cadaveric dissections in Prof. Grant’s anatomy lab in Toronto and his accompanying descriptions are brief, original and brilliant.

I am very pleased to report that the editors and publishers of this latest iteration of Grant’s Atlas have not only striven to keep to the spirit of the original, but have also prominently featured a tribute to Professor Grant.

In addition, the present editors have brought in new material related to surface anatomy and medical imaging.

My advice to the present editors – please keep up the excellent work, and stay true to the spirit of the original!

The early German atlases are also quite good – some have spectacular illustrations – and many of these have been updated for the American market. Netter is also a very good atlas … for undergraduates.

But the undisputed leader, that towers head and shoulders above these pretenders to the throne is in fact Grant’s Atlas. Its illustrations are uniformly superb – and the text is brilliant.

Gastroesophageal reflux is one of the most common maladies of mankind. Approximately 40% of the adult population of the USA suffers from significant heartburn and the numerous antacids advertised incessantly on national television represents a $8 billion per year drug market. The ability to control acid secretion with the increasingly effective acid-suppressive agents such as the H2 blockers (pepcid, zantac) and proton pump inhibitors (nexium, prevacid) has given physicians an excellent method of treating the symptoms of acid reflux.

Unfortunately, this has not eradicated reflux disease. It has just changed its nature. While heartburn, ulceration and strictures have become rare, reflux-induced adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is becoming increasingly common. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia is now the most rapidly increasing cancer type in the Western world.

At present, there is no histologic test that has any practical value in the diagnosis of reflux disease. The only histologic diagnostic criteria are related to changes in the squamous epithelium which are too insensitive and nonspecific for effective patient management. It is widely recognized that columnar metaplasia of the esophagus (manifest histologically as cardiac, oxyntocardiac and intestinal epithelia) is caused by reflux. However, except for intestinal metaplasia, which is diagnostic for Barrett esophagus, these columnar epithelia are not used to diagnose reflux disease in biopsies. The reason for this is that these epithelial types are indistinguishable from “normal” “gastric” cardiac mucosa. In standard histology texts, this “normal gastric cardia” is 2-3 cm long.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Chandrasoma and his team at USC produced autopsy data suggesting that cardiac and oxyntocardiac mucosa is normally absent from this region and that their presence in biopsies was histologic evidence of reflux disease. From this data, they determined that the presence of cardiac mucosa was a pathologic entity caused by reflux and could therefore be used as a highly specific and sensitive diagnostic criterion for the histologic diagnosis of reflux disease. They call this entity “reflux carditis”. In addition, the length of these metaplastic columnar epithelia in the esophagus was an accurate measure of the severity of reflux disease in a given patient.

At present, there is some controversy over whether cardiac mucosa is totally absent or present normally to the extent of 0-4 mm. While this should not be a deterrent to changing criteria which are dependent on there normally being 20-30 cm of cardiac mucosa, there has been little mainstream attempt to change existing endoscopic and pathologic diagnostic criteria in the mainstream of either gastroenterology or pathology.

The ATLAS will be the source of easily digestible practical information for pathologists faced with biopsies from this region. It will also guide gastroenterologists as they biopsy these patients.

Bone age assessment, a crucial part of the diagnosis and management of pediatric growth disorders as well as the timing of certain pediatric orthopedic procedures, has for decades depended on the meticulous examination of plain radiographs. Examining the subtle changes present within the maturing human hand often proves to be challenging and time-consuming.

Building on the popular Greulich and Pyle atlas, this book modernizes the method for pediatric skeletal maturity determination. It offers a wealth of images, carefully mined from thousands of digital radiographs from University of Virginia’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), edited to best demonstrate important developmental bone features, and organized by age and sex for rapid reference. To expedite learning and clinical image analysis, images come in pairs: annotated and unannotated, for easy comparison. Succinct annotations on the images replace lengthy text to provide a quicker and clearer understanding of the skeletal age. These annotations highlight important and subtle features to help distinguish images that otherwise look superficially alike. The result is an atlas of exceptionally high quality skeletal radiographic standards that capture both the major and finer details of the accepted standards of Greulich and Pyle.

The user-friendly format of this book enables a faster, more accurate, and more educational approach to determining skeletal maturity. The Digital Bone Age Companion packaged with the book is a computer program that facilitates viewing of the atlas images in digital format. Users can easily zoom in on radiographic features, set image level and width to their preference, and compare two or three reference standards side-by-side for difficult cases. Most importantly, the program expedites evaluation, optimizes workflow, and minimizes user-introduced errors with the reliable bone age calculator and built-in report generator. The digital format may also be available for integration with your Radiology Information System (RIS) for further workflow enhancement.

Given the broad application of pediatric bone aging, Skeletal Development of the Hand and Wrist is not only intended for practicing and training radiologists, but for all of those who employ bone age studies as part of their practice

Diabetes mellitus is increasing in incidence, prevalence, and importance as a chronic disease throughout the world. The International Diabetes Federation projects that by 2030 there will be 438 million people with diabetes on a global scale. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control calculates that 25.8 million people (or 8.3% of the population) have diabetes and nearly 2 million Americans develop diabetes each year. Thus, the burden of diabetes is enormous in terms of the magnitude of the population affected.  There has been an exciting explosion of knowledge about fundamental mechanisms related to diabetes. We have gained insights into the pathogenesis both of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and with that, the prospect of implementing prevention strategies to delay or interdict the disease processes. Great progress has been made in islet transplantation, which offers the potential of reversing diabetes, while approaches to islet replacement by regeneration or stem cell therapy are in their infancy. Whether diabetes prevention will come from advances in understanding the processes of islet neogenesis and proliferation, from genetic engineering, or from protecting xenoislets or stem cells from immunologic attack remains unclear. All are potential avenues of pursuit. This newly revised, comprehensive, four-color Atlas of Diabetes, 4th Edition, is extensively updated with references to the current literature.  Developed by leading authorities in the field, this Atlas offers an indispensable collection of images, including algorithms, tables, charts, and schematic drawings.  It continues its role as a leading reference work and an invaluable contribution to the field.
This handbook is an invaluable resource for improving the management of diabetes. Chapters cover the fundamentals, including epidemiology, history and physical examination, and functional evaluations. Diabetes in children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics are addressed. Differential diagnosis is emphasized, and evidence-based guidelines and patient-specific considerations aid the reader with injury evaluation and care. Notably, the book highlights the importance of understanding diabetic symptoms when determining the source of illnesses. In addition, the text presents the spectrum of treatment options for diabetes. The book is complete with appendices that explain the evidence-based approach used throughout and the science behind therapeutic modalities
