A Doody’s Core Title for 2011!
Praise for The Color Atlas of Family Medicine for iPhone and iPad!
“While there is no shortage of quality medical applications available for iPhone and iPad, there are very few that offer the quality and breadth of information that you’ll find in The Color Atlas of Family Medicine….Bottom Line: The Color Atlas of Family Medicine for iPhone and iPad is a truly comprehensive resource for family physicians, general practitioners, internal medicine residents and medical students alike.”–Tapscape
From a JAMA Review
“This book was a genuine treat to review. The more than 1000 pages are chock full of figures and photographs illustrating virtually every illness seen by a family physician or other specialist. But this book, edited by 4 family physicians and an obstetrician-gynecologist, is much more than simply a pictorial atlas. Various chapters are written by family physicians as well as specialists.
“The Color Atlas of Family Medicine is a comprehensive visual guide to daily patient care. It will be valuable to medical students, residents, and all practicing physicians. I recommend that it be included in the library of every family medicine residency program. It is an excellent reference and it will be enjoyed by anyone who reads the patient stories or anyone who just wants to look at the figures and photographs. I think this book is a classic example of why the Internet will try but never take the place of a well-written hardbound textbook.”
–JAMA
“The Color Atlas of Family Medicine is a wonderful compendium of 1500 clinical images supported by comprehensive, evidence-based information useful to any clinician. It is the kind of book that many of us who practice clinical medicine had hoped to find, but never succeeded; that is, until now. Whereas this book will definitely appeal to those who love to examine clinical photographs, it is also an excellent resource for almost every topic encountered in a standard primary practice….In this day and age when new products must compete with the convenience of computer-generated information, this atlas has a unique competitive edge. This entertaining and useful 1095-page resource is available 24/7, regardless of whether or not the electricity is running. I have a very rural practice and this atlas has become an invaluable adjunct to my database of information at hand. In my opinion, it is underpriced and well worth the investment. It makes a wonderful gift to any student of medicine or clinician and will entertain and educate for years. I am truly grateful for its creation.”–The Permanente Journal
5 STAR DOODY’S REVIEW!
“This is what a modern textbook should be. It is concise yet comprehensive in the breadth of topics and, as the title suggests, robust with color photographs of extraordinarily good quality.
“The editors state clearly in the preface that family physicians see a wide variety of conditions that lend themselves to an atlas such as this, and they support the pictures with evidence-based information, which makes this book so worthwhile and valuable. The editors and contributors balance the images and text, in an extremely useful way.
“Although the title puts the focus on family physicians, the book clearly is a tremendous resource for all, including internal medicine practitioners, students, and those in every specialty who may only rarely encounter some of these conditions. The list of contributors is extensive and well balanced, bringing together experts from all specialties of medicine.
“By far, this is one of the best, most useful textbooks I have seen in a very long time. It is a must for the library of every primary care physician.”

“Perhaps more remarkable is how much hasn’t changed in the past quarter century. The patient-centered encounter remains the backbone of effective care, whether in the office, on the telephone or online. In these encounters, attentiveness to the interaction between biological, socioeconomic, and psychological factors is as crucial and relevant as ever. Family medicine residency programs continue to provide excellent preparation for physicians interested in caring for individuals of all ages and their families within a broad range of practice settings, styles, and populations. Primary medical care continues to be recognized as the cornerstone of an effective health care system, although integration of primary care into the broader US system remains far from ideal”–Provided by publisher.

Family physicians are often the first, and sometimes the only, point of contact for many patients within the health care system. The standard 12-lead electrocardiogram is one of the most common tests obtained and interpreted by the family physician, with most of the physicians reading their own recordings and basing clinical decisions on their findings. It has been shown that family physicians can achieve proficiency in the interpretation of over 95 percent of all electrocardiogram findings seen in the primary care setting. Although computerized interpretation is widely available, it is considered unreliable in up to 20 percent of the cases, making competency and interpretation by family physicians an essential skill. This book provides the necessary skills for family physicians to use in interpreting electrocardiograms, both in their offices and in the emergency rooms of their hospitals. It also should prove of value to other primary care physicians, as well as medical students and residents of nearly all medical specialties. As the subtitle states, this book is about the essential elements involved in electrocardiographic interpretation. It is not all inclusive. However, it does cover the abnormalities most likely to be seen by family physicians in their everyday practice of medicine
