Carnosine : Physiological Effects and Research Insights

Physiology  Comments Off on Carnosine : Physiological Effects and Research Insights
Jul 092018

Carnosine (b-alanyl histidine) is a water-soluble dipeptide. It is mainly distributed in the skeletal muscles and in the brain. It is widely recognized that carnosine has various functions including maintenance of the acid-base balance, antioxidant, protective chelating, and anti-glycation activity. In this book, Chapter One aims to discuss the properties of carnosine and its role in the prevention/inhibition of the oxidation processes occurring in meat and meat products, which are associated with the deterioration of their quality characteristics. Chapter Two reviews the perspective role of carnosine in tumor-related phenomena. Chapter Three reviews the possible mechanisms of neuroprotective functions of carnosine, and discusses the development of drugs for neurodegenerative diseases from food-derived carnosine. Chapter Four studies the neurotropic and protective effects of L-carnosine. Chapter Five focuses on the protective effects of carnosine and its derivative trolox-carnosine against inflammation and oxidative stress in experimental arthritis, carrageenan induced hind paw edema, chondrocytes under H2O2 injury and degradation of hyaluronan.

Neonatal Infections: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management

Nephrology, Pathology, Physiology  Comments Off on Neonatal Infections: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management
Jul 052018

There are approximately 4 million newborns annually in the United States, including 400,000 infants born preterm. This care occurs in nurseries of all acuity levels, sizes, and regions across the country and is provided by a variety of providers, including pediatricians, family practice doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
The most common complication during the newborn period is suspected or proven infection – either those acquired during the delivery itself or before delivery in the womb. Indeed, 4 of the 8 most commonly-prescribed medications in newborns annually are antibiotics. Therefore, these providers must all be knowledgeable about the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and approach to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neonatal infections. However, many of these nurseries do not have convenient access to pediatric infectious disease consultation or support, and would benefit from a convenient reference guide.
This book effectively and succinctly covers the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, approach to diagnosis and treatment, and important aspects of preventative care for the most frequently encountered neonatal and congenital infections. The first section discusses common neonatal infections (i.e., those acquired during or after delivery), including sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, and other focal infections. The second section covers the most frequently encountered congenital infections (i.e., those acquired via the placenta while the fetus is still in-utero). Finally, the concluding section discusses the basics of infection prevention in the nursery setting, including general principles of infection prevention, how to apply those principles to families, and how to manage a suspected outbreak of infection within a nursery.
This book is a unique contribution to the field. Existing texts such as the AAP Red Book fold neonatal infections in within chapters on a given pathogen, but the information is difficult to find and access quickly. By covering neonatal and congenital infections thoroughly while still keeping each section clear and concise, this Handbook will be a valuable resource for the busy nursery provider.

Monitoring Tissue Perfusion in Shock: From Physiology to the Bedside

Critical Care, Physiology  Comments Off on Monitoring Tissue Perfusion in Shock: From Physiology to the Bedside
Jun 132018

This book describes various aspects of the basic physiological processes critical to tissue perfusion and cellular oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, blood flow distribution and microcirculation.
In the context of monitoring critically ill patients in the early hours of circulatory shock, it is essential to recognize changes in traditional parameters such as mean arterial pressure and cardiac output, and to assess the need for active intervention. However, even if global macrocirculatory variables are restored, abnormalities in tissue oxygenation may persist. Tissue hypoperfusion is connected to the development of organ failure and, if it goes unrecognized, may worsen the prognosis. As a result, there is a growing interest in methods for monitoring regional perfusion in peripheral tissues to predict or diagnose ongoing hypoperfusion.

In this work, eminent experts from a range of disciplines convey a working knowledge of how regional monitoring in shock can complement the conventional global parameters of oxygen transport, and demonstrate that real-time bedside assessment of tissue oxygenation is readily achievable using noninvasive monitoring techniques. Accordingly, the book offers a valuable, easy-to-use guide for the entire ICU team and other clinicians.
