Kumar & Clark’s Cases in Clinical Medicine (Pocket Essentials) – 3rd Edition

This is new edition of the book previously called Acute Clinical Medicine in the highly popular Kumar and Clark family. Cases in Clinical Medicine covers in handbook form the complete range of acute medical conditions and problems that junior doctors are likely to encounter during the first years of training. It is divided into chapters reflecting core medical specialties – including infectious diseases; STD; gastroenterology; etc. Each chapter is then subdivided into case-based problems, such as (for example) pyrexia of unknown origin (under the Infectious Disease Group), HIV/Aids (under STD) and Vomiting and Weight Loss (under Gastroenterology). Each problem follows a standard pattern or template: it begins with a case history, and is accompanied by short, succinct text divided up by headings such as ‘What are the commonest causes of…’; What factors predispose to…’ Where relevant there are also sections on pathology, pathophysiology and prognosis. Important points to note in the acute context are picked out in boxes (‘Beware’, ‘Remember!’ and ‘Information’) as are vital investigations.

  • More than 200 cases
  • Remember! boxes
  • Investigations boxes
  • Information boxes

Review

“The book follow the principles of problem-based learning widely used in medical schools. The design is inviting and the layout easy to use… The book seems particularly suitable for medical students preparing for their finals, but it also has has important things to teach FY1s on the ward and the acute take, FY2s about to start a job in emergency…it seems to succeed at its stated aim of teaching problem-solving in many acute medical scenarios in an approachable fashion.”

June 2013, British Journal of Hospital Medicine

From customer reviews of the previous edition (Acute Clinical Medicine): The information in this text is concise, relevant and reliable . evidence-based whenever possible. The depth of knowledge goes beyond that expected of clinical medical students and so this book will be of use during the Foundation Course and maybe even specialist training years. .As a ward-based reference it is excellent, containing all the acute situations one is likely to encounter whilst on a medical attachment. Information is outlined in a concise and readable manner but the detail is more than sufficient to impart the key information one needs to know. Key points are regularly reinforced using Remember! textboxes to highlight their importance. .The use of case histories in each section is a good method of highlighting the key points yet also develops understanding and learning when reference is made to a clinical case.. There is good use made of quality diagrams, tables and photographs throughout the text.’

Handbook of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid Base Imbalances

With a clear, comprehensive approach, this quick-reference handbook on the basic principles of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances, imbalances, and related disorders is a must-have for all nursing students.

Review

I love this book! Had to teach F & E and Acid-Base after a couple of years away from it–and this book really solidified my knowledge. Author nails the key points, gives great examples, and helped me teach the concepts to my students far better than did the textbook we were using. This book can be used for basics as well as advanced concepts. Wish I would have had it back when I was a student! Very helpful.
