Neurogenetics (What Do I Do Now)

By (author): Christine Klein, Kishore R. Kumar, Carolyn M. Sue, Alexander M

To some, the field of neurogenetics appears perplexing and indecipherable. In this volume, we will address this issue by providing clinicians with a framework for dealing with these disorders. This book is not intended to be an in-depth, comprehensive review of all neurogenetic conditions from ‘A to Z’. Instead, we will provide a concise discussion using case studies to illustrate the most important and topical neurogenetic disorders. This case-based approach will make the book easy to reference, clinically relevant, approachable, and, we feel, more interesting.

The contribution of genetics to many neurological diseases is becoming increasingly apparent, and so it is imperative to stay up-to-date with these conditions. The 31 chapters in this volume cover a wide range of inherited conditions including forms of dystonia, Parkinson disease, spastic paraplegias, mitochondrial diseases, myopathies, neuropathies, and much more. Particular attention is paid to practical issues regarding how to make a genetic diagnosis and how to counsel the family. We will also address some contemporary issues in neurogenetics, such as the impact of direct-to-consumer genetic testing.

General Approach
In keeping with the WDIDN series, each chapter commences with a brief case study, which will be used as an example of an important condition in neurogenetics. The discussion will then be centered on the case, with a focus on crucial issues regarding the clinical assessment, investigations and management of these conditions. Key clinical points will be listed at the end of the chapter, along with a list of suggested further reading. All case studies in this book are based on real patients seen by the authors or their colleagues.

Mutants: On Genetic Variety and the Human Body

By (author): Armand Marie Leroi

Visit Armand Marie Leroi on the web:

Stepping effortlessly from myth to cutting-edge science, Mutants gives a brilliant narrative account of our genetic code and the captivating people whose bodies have revealed it—a French convent girl who found herself changing sex at puberty; children who, echoing Homer’s Cyclops, are born with a single eye in the middle of their foreheads; a village of long-lived Croatian dwarves; one family, whose bodies were entirely covered with hair, was kept at the Burmese royal court for four generations and gave Darwin one of his keenest insights into heredity. This elegant, humane, and engaging book “captures what we know of the development of what makes us human” (Nature).

The concept of epigenetics has been known about since the 1940s, but it is only in the last 10 years that research has shown just how wide ranging its effects are. It is now a very widely-used term, but there is still a lot of confusion surrounding what it actually is and does.

Epigenetics is a new textbook that brings together the structure and machinery of epigenetic modification, how epigenetic modification controls cellular functions, and the evidence for the relationship between epigenetics and disease. It is a valuable source of information about all aspects of the subject for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals.

Polymeric Gene Delivery: Principles and Applications

Features: Used Book in Good Condition

To treat disease or correct genetic disorders using gene therapy, the most suitable vehicle must be able to deliver genes to the appropriate tissues and cells in the body in a specific as well as safe and effective manner. While viruses are the most popular vehicles to date, their disadvantages include toxicity, limited size of genes they can carry, and limited scale of industrial production.

Polymeric Gene Delivery: Principles and Applications is the first comprehensive book to specifically address polymeric gene delivery systems. Uniting the expertise of international academic and industrial scientists who are working in the area of polymeric vectors for gene delivery, it is written by prominent researchers directly involved in this field. The book is divided into five sections that deal with challenges and opportunities in gene delivery and the efficient delivery of genes into somatic cells using polymeric vectors. The authors discuss using biodegradable polymers, condensing and non-condensing polymeric systems, microspheres and nanospheres, and designing specialized delivery systems based on targeting strategies.

Polymeric Gene Delivery: Principles and Applications accentuates the versatility of polymeric delivery systems, including the potential for biocompatibility, the ability to design their formulation and geometry for a specific purpose, and the ease of modification to the surface of polymeric carriers. This book is an up-to-date guide for researchers in the field and those interested in entering this dynamic field.

The Initiation of DNA Replication in Eukaryotes

?Every time a cell divides, a copy of its genomic DNA has to be faithfully copied to generate new genomic DNA for the daughter cells.  The process of DNA replication needs to be precisely regulated to ensure that replication of the genome is complete and accurate, but that re-replication does not occur.  Errors in DNA replication can lead to genome instability and cancer.  The process of replication initiation is of paramount importance, because once the cell is committed to replicate DNA, it must finish this process.  A great deal of progress has been made in understanding how DNA replication is initiated in eukaryotic cells in the past ten years, but this is the first one-source book on these findings.  The Initiation of DNA Replication in Eukaryotes will focus on how DNA replication is initiated in eukaryotic cells. While the concept of replication initiation is simple, its elaborate regulation and integration with other cell processes results in a high level of complexity.  This book will cover how the position of replication initiation is chosen, how replication initiation is integrated with the phases of the cell cycle, and how it is regulated in the case of damage to DNA.   It is the cellular protein machinery that enables replication initiation to be activated and regulated.  We now have an in-depth understanding of how cellular proteins work together to start DNA replication, and this new resource will reveal a mechanistic description of DNA replication initiation as well.

The Genetics of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease

Features: Used Book in Good Condition

The explosive growth in the field of molecular biology over the last two decades has started to make a great impact on clinical medicine. Genes have been cloned for diseases that were poorly understood only a decade ago. Additionally, investigators are increasingly aware that there are strong genetic components to complex disorders, such as osteoporosis, that are not classically thought of as genetic disorders. New insights into the pathogenesis of metabolic bone diseases have been obtained from investigations into the molecular biology of these diseases and new therapies will become available based on these new insights. In The Genefies of Osteoporosis and Metabolie Bane Disease, I have assembled an internationally renowned group of experts to write the various chapters. Each of the authors is an expert in his/her field who is currently performing research on the content of their chapter and have made important contributions to the understanding of the clinical fea tures and pathophysiology of metabolic bone disease and genetics. The first part of The Genefies of Osteoporosis and Metabolie Bane Disease addresses issues related to genetic contributions to the development of osteoporosis and the many factors that must be considered when searching for genesthat predispose to osteoporosis. The second sec tion addresses recent advances in the clinical and molecular biological aspects of inherited metabolic bone disorders. The last section reviews the latest techniques for finding genes that predispose to metabolic bone diseases.

Neurodegenerative Diseases: Clinical Aspects, Molecular Genetics and Biomarkers

This book gives an overview of the current knowledge on the most common neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and additional neurodegenerative diseases. Different aspects of each disease are reviewed, including clinical issues, treatments, basic discoveries (genetics and molecular biology), and translation of basic research into biomarkers for early diagnosis. In addition, emerging data indicate that neurodegeneration seems to also be present in classically non-degenerative disorders. Therefore, a chapter about overlapping mechanisms between dementias and psychiatric disorders is included, as well as a description of the role of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis.

Neurodegenerative Diseases is aimed at clinicians, particularly those working in academic hospitals. This multidisciplinary book will also be of interest to basic researchers in medical fields.
