Gastroenterology/Hepatology  Comments Off on Sherlock’s Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System – 13th Edition (July 2018 Release)
Jun 162018

A new, fully updated edition of the world’s most famous book on liver diseases—with updating of all areas and inclusion of new specific topics, by internationally renowned specialists

This brand new edition of the classic book on hepatology provides a concise, clearly presented and well-structured review across the whole spectrum of hepatobiliary diseases by some of the world’s leading hepatologists and hepatobiliary specialists. Where many other hepatology textbooks provide detailed accounts of basic science and clinical management, Sherlock’s Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System, 13th Edition takes a different approach. Concentrating on the clinical decisions to be taken and the relevant supporting data, it is written and edited to maintain Sheila Sherlock’s unique approach, in particular the clarity and layout of the text, and the explanatory figures and tables. The book is thus concise, highly accessible, and generously illustrated with over 700 attractive color figures. There is a pithy approach to each disease based both on evidence and on the authors’ experience, the hallmark of this book. Based on these elements, the 12th edition was awarded first prize in the 2012 British Medical Association Book Awards in the Internal Medicine category.

Sherlock’s Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System begins by introducing the anatomy and function of the liver to readers, continuing then with in-depth coverage of liver biopsy techniques and interpretation, and fibrogenesis and its assessment. There are then chapters on all aspects of liver and biliary disease including acute liver failure, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, hepatitis B and C, alcohol and the liver, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, drug related liver reactions, cholestatic, autoimmune and genetic liver diseases, benign and malignant tumours and not least liver transplantation. There are also chapters on the liver in pregnancy, in the neonate, infancy and childhood, in systemic diseases and in infections. This new edition also features four new individual chapters focusing on coagulation, non-invasive assessment of fibrosis and cirrhosis; vascular diseases of the liver and portal vein thrombosis, and nutrition in liver disease. Digital downloads of the figures from this edition are offered on a companion website.

  • Internationally recognized and loved, world-renowned hepatology book, first published in 1955
  • Takes a one-of-a-kind, clinical approach maintaining Sheila Sherlock’s clarity and legacy of presentation
  • Full colour throughout with 700 illustrative figures
  • Wide faculty of international contributors

Sherlock’s Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System, 13th Edition is an ideal primer in hepatology for students and trainees in hepatology and gastroenterology, and a valuable resource for all specialist gastroenterologists and hepatologists, paediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, general physicians and specialist nurses.

Gastrointestinal Cancers : Prevention, Detection and Treatment, Volume 1

Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Pathology  Comments Off on Gastrointestinal Cancers : Prevention, Detection and Treatment, Volume 1
Jun 142018

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is well known cancer of digestive system that includes cancer of esophagus, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus. The incidence of GI cancer is higher in developed countries than developing counties. In developed countries such as United States, GI cancer accounts to 20 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer cases. In the developing countries inside Asia the burden of GI cancer is increasing because of aging, growth of the population and the risk factors including smoking, obesity, changing lifestyle and high prevalence of H pylori, HBV and HCV. In most developing countries, cancer control programs or early detection and treatment services are limited despite this increase.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth commonest cause of cancer-related mortality across the world. This cancer is the fifth-most-common cause of cancer deaths in the United States and the seventh most common cancer in Europe. The majority of cases are diagnosed in the advanced stages, making curative therapy impossible and leading to poor prognosis and incidence equaling mortality. It has been estimated that rates of pancreatic cancer have been increasing slightly over the past decade. Pancreatic cancer is a very lethal and aggressive cancer and diagnosis is delayed, as the symptoms appear when the cancer is in advanced stage.

Liver cancer (also called hepatic cancer) is a cancer that originates in the hepatic cells, also known as primary liver cancer. Some cancers arise in other part of body and metastasize in the liver called secondary or metastatic liver cancer. The most common form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which begins in the liver cell (hepatocyte). Primary liver cancer accounts for about 2% of cancers in the USA, but up to half of all cancers in some developing countries due to the prevalence of infections specifically by hepatitis virus.

On the basis of various incidences of different gastrointestinal cancer motivates us to compile a book related to gastrointestinal cancers and focus on the almost all type of prevention, detection and treatment methods from the world experts. This book is the culmination of the efforts of several researchers, junior and senior clinicians as well scientists as per their field of expertise across the world. In this book authors focused on different gastrointestinal cancers and describe the various methods for prevention, detection and treatment. The book has enormous scope and will benefit multiple audience including researchers, clinicians, patients, academicians, industrialists, and students.

Gastric Cardiac Cancer

Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Oncology  Comments Off on Gastric Cardiac Cancer
Jun 132018

This book is designed to present readers with comprehensive, high-quality research results on almost all aspects of this carcinoma in clinical management, from correct determination of the esophagogastric junction, issues on cardiac mucosa, epidemiology, and natural history, to clinical, endoscopic, and histopathologic features and diagnostic pitfalls of this carcinoma at both early and advanced stages. Once diagnosed and correctly staged, clinical management of this carcinoma at the early stage is addressed primarily with endoscopic therapy employing the latest endoscopic technology such as endoscopic submucosal dissection, in which detailed technical topics of the endoscopic therapy are written by experts in the field with sections from pre-resection staging and patient preparation to post-resection complications and management.
Subsequently, clinical management of gastric cardiac carcinoma at advanced stages is discussed at length with a personalized, multidiscipline approach with strategies from surgical resections with various methods, to pre-, peri- and post-resection chemoradiation therapies as well as the most advanced immunotherapy. A state-of-art approach with the results of meta-analyses and large-scale randomized double-blinded clinical trials are employed throughout these chapters. For patients at the terminal ill stage, the appropriate palliative care plan is presented by experienced clinicians armed with the latest clinical practice guidelines to better manage and help those patients in the last period of their lives.
