The Word As Scalpel: A History of Medical Sociology

By (author): Samuel W. Bloom

“A doctor can damage a patient as much with a misplaced word as with a slip of the scalpel.” In this statement, from Lawrence J. Henderson, a famous physician whose name is part of the basic science of medicine, epitomizes the central theme of The Word as Scalpel. If words, the main substance of human relations, are so potent for harm, how equally powerful they can be to help if used with disciplined knowledge and understanding. Nowhere does this simple truth apply more certainly than in the behavior of a physician.
Medical Sociology studies the full social context of health and disease, the interpersonal relations, social institutions, and the influence of social factors on the problems of medicine. Throughout its history, medical sociology divides naturally into two parts: the pre-modern, represented by various studies of health and social problems in Europe and the United States until the second World War, and the modern post-war period. The modern period has seen rapid growth and the achievement of the full formal panoply of professionalism.
This engaging account documents the development of professional associations, official journals, and programs of financial support, both private and governmental. Written by a distinguished pioneer in medical sociology, The Word as Scalpel is a definitive study of a relatively new, but critically important field.

Behavioral Integrative Care: Treatments That Work in the Primary Care Setting

Integrated care is arguably one of the most important developments in the delivery of health care over the last few years. This new approach to health care, roughly defined as the provision of behavioral or mental health care in a way that is more coordinated with the primary medical healthcare setting, has the focused goal of providing a more complete care for the patient. This book focuses on three main content areas. Firstly, the treatment of psychological problems in the context of primary medical care will be addressed in several chapters. Secondly, several chapters address co-morbid psychological factors that play a key role in the effective medical management of physical diseases, either acute or chronic. Finally, several chapters address issues relevant to the overall practice of integrated care. This book is intended to extend and bridge the existing literatures of integrated care, behavioral medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, medical cost offset, and healthcare economics, by providing a comprehensive and current handbook of the clinical protocols that might be applied to the practice of integrated care.

Water Recreation and Disease: Plausibility of Associated Infections: Acute Effects, Sequelae and Mortality

By (author): K. Pond

Worldwide, the popularity of recreational activities, which involve contact with water, is continuing to grow. Moreover, ease of travel and change in human behavior has altered the use of water for recreational purposes. Users should be aware that recreational exposures to pathogens may result in disease. Susceptible populations including people with reduced immune function (e.g. resulting from disease (cancer, HIV) genetic susceptibility, age, etc.) or lack of immunity to locally endemic diseases (e.g. tourists) may be at higher risk of contracting illnesses. In most cases the primary disease symptoms associated with recreational water contact are acute, such as diarrhea and respiratory infections. Although less frequently reported, more serious and potentially fatal disease is a risk to recreational users of water especially in certain susceptible populations.

In addition to diseases which have severe primary outcomes (e.g. primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, typhoid, leptospirosis) a number of infections may lead to sequelae with serious consequences including renal disease (from E. coli O157:H7 for example) cardiac and nutritional disorders. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review and analysis of potential severe disease outcomes, including acute effects and sequelae associated with recreational water activities. This book will be useful to all those concerned with recreational water quality, including environmental and public health professionals, local authorities, user groups, and tourists.

Water Recreation and Disease sets out to identify the more severe waterborne diseases and their sequelae, which may be acquired while undertaking water-based recreation in marine, freshwater, spas/whirlpools and swimming pools. The review systematically brings information together on the ecology and health aspects of a variety of pathogens where cases attributed to recreational use of water have been documented.

This is the only available guide to bring together information on the more severe waterborne diseases to assist decision-making in recreational water management.

    Behavioural Methods in Consciousness Research

The past two decades have seen a surge of interest in the topic of consciousness, with the result that the research literature has expanded greatly. However, until now, there has been little consensus on just which methods are the most effective for the study of consciousness. As a result, a wide range of experimental paradigms have been employed, sometimes making it different to compare and contrast experimental findings.

‘Behavioural methods in consciousness research’ is the first book of its kind, providing an overview of methods and approaches for studying consciousness. The chapters are written by leading researchers and experts, who describe the methods they actually use in their own studies, along with their pitfalls, problems, and difficulties.

For all students and researchers embarking on research in this area – and even seasoned researchers – this book is a valuable source of information in helping them design, perform, and analyse scientifically rigorous experiments.
