Overcoming Alcohol Use Problems: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program (Treatments That Work)

Features: Overcoming Alcohol Use Problems A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Program Workbook
By (author): Elizabeth E. Epstein, Barbara S. McCrady

Alcohol use can have negative effects on your day-to-day functioning, health, and relationships. If drinking is a problem in your life, this program can help you regain control. It has been developed with the benefit of each author’s 25+ years of clinical experience in treating substance abusers and has been proven effective in helping individuals to achieve and maintain abstinence. Over the course of 12 weeks, you will meet with a qualified mental health or addictions professional to learn various skills and strategies for quitting drinking and staying sober. Together, you will come up with an abstinence plan that fits your needs.

The program involves self-recording to help you identify your drinking patterns and triggers. You will plan for managing high-risk situations, including interactions with other drinkers in your social network. Urges to drink are to be expected and you will learn ways to deal with them. Focusing on the negative consequences of drinking will help motivate you to stop. As you experience the rewards of sobriety and find positive alternatives to drinking, remaining abstinent will become easier. You will also learn useful techniques for managing negative emotions and challenging alcohol-related thoughts. Other areas you may work on in this program include how to cope with anxiety and depression, build social support, be assertive, manage anger, and problem solve. Before ending treatment, you will need to make a plan for maintaining your gains and prepare for handling slips and relapses.

It is important that you be an active participant in your treatment. You can use this workbook to follow along with the information presented by your therapist and to do exercises in session. Each chapter provides instructions and forms for compelling assignments. With your efforts in this program and committment to abstinence, you can overcome your alcohol problems.

Sex, Lies, and Brain Scans: What is really going on inside our heads?

Features: Sex Lies and Brain Scans What Is Really Going on Inside Our Heads
By (author): Barbara J. Sahakian, Julia Gottwald

The recent explosion of neuroscience techniques has proved to be game changing in terms of understanding the healthy brain, and in the development of neuropsychiatric treatments. One of the key techniques available to us is functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which allows us to examine the human brain non-invasively, and observe brain activity in real time. Through fMRI, we are beginning to build a deeper understanding of our thoughts, motivations, and behaviours. Recent reports that some patients who have all indications of being in a persistent vegetative state show conscious awareness, and were able to communicate with researchers, demonstrate perhaps the most remarkable and dramatic use of fMRI. But this is just the most striking of a number of areas in which fMRI is being used to ‘read minds’, albeit in a very limited way.

As neuroscientists unravel the regions of the brain involved in reward and motivation, and in romantic love, we are likely to develop the capacity to influence responses such as love using drugs. fMRI studies have also been used to indicate that many people who would not regard themselves as racist show a racial bias in their emotional responses to faces of another racial group. Meanwhile, the reliability of fMRI as a lie detector in murder cases is being debated – what if the individual simply believes, falsely, that he or she committed a murder?

Sex, Lies, and fMRI takes readers beyond the media headlines. Barbara Sahakian and Julia Gottwald consider what the technique of fMRI entails, and what information it can give us, showing which applications are possible today, and which ones are science fiction. They also consider the important ethical questions these techniques raise. Should individuals applying for jobs as teachers or judges be screened for unconscious racial bias? What if the manipulation of love using ‘love potions’ was misused for economic or military ends? How far will we allow neuroscience to go? It is time to make up our minds.

Neuropharmacology of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS): The Science Behind the Headlines (Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences)

Features: Neuropharmacology of New Psychoactive Substances NPS The Science Behind the Headlines Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences

Designer drugs, or new psychoactive substances (NPS), are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of classic drugs of abuse. There has been an alarming worldwide increase in the abuse of NPS in recent years. NPS are cheap, easy to obtain, and often legally available. In this volume, leading experts summarize the latest studies regarding the molecular mechanisms of action, behavioral effects, and adverse consequences of popular NPS. Specific chapters clarify the differences between various types of NPS, namely: stimulants, cannabinoids and hallucinogens. Thus, this volume broadens our understanding of NPS and provides insight into the rapidly evolving “new drug” phenomenon.

Behavioral Neuroendocrinology

Inspired by Carlos Beyer’s 50 years of pioneering research and influence on his students and colleagues, Behavioral Neuroendocrinology builds upon Beyer’s fundamental discoveries and concepts as well as their widespread implications. It presents original research and reviews on mechanisms ? genomic and non-genomic ? of steroid and protein hormone action; the role of steroid metabolism, especially aromatization, protein phosphorylation, and neurotransmitter action in mediating reproductive behavior and sexual differentiation; and brain and spinal cord mechanisms in sexual behavior and analgesia.

This book presents a rich diversity of topics ? lactation, maternal behavior, pheromone action, chronobiology, allodynia, angiogenesis, prostate physiology, sexual motivation, and specific brain systems, including vomeronasal system, cerebellum, preoptic area, hypothalamus, and spinal cord. This book brings together, in one source, an international “family” of researchers whose work has evolved in diverse but related ways from a seminal set of discoveries and concepts in behavioral neuroendocrinology.

Inflammation-Associated Depression: Evidence, Mechanisms and Implications (Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences)

Features: Inflammation Associated Depression Evidence Mechanisms and Implications Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences

Inflammation has invaded the field of psychiatry. The finding that cytokines are elevated in various affective and psychotic disorders brings to the forefront the necessity of identifying the precise research domain criteria (RDoCs) that inflammation is responsible for. This task is certainly the most advanced in major depressive disorders. The reason is that a dearth of clinical and preclinical studies has demonstrated that inflammation can cause symptoms of depression and conversely, cytokine antagonists can attenuate symptoms of depression in medical and psychiatric patients with chronic low grade inflammation. Important knowledge has been gained on the symptom dimensions that inflammation is driving and the mechanisms of action of cytokines in the brain, providing new targets for drug research and development. The aim of the book “Inflammation-Associated Depression” is to present this field of research and its implications in a didactic and comprehensive manner to basic and clinical scientists, psychiatrists, physicians, and students at the graduate level.
